Why use walking poles?

Choose and how to use hiking poles or lightweight walking poles has many advantages.

They allow you to:

  • Poles help relieve the back and joints by transferring 30% of the body's weight to the arms.
  • Protecting the knees on tough descents.
  • Improving blood circulation during ascents.
  • Clearing obstacles more easily.
  • Reducing muscle fatigue in the lower body.
  • Having a more regular pace,
  • Having better posture.
  • Significantly reducing swelling in the hands and fingers, etc.

For long hikes and tough descents, use hiking poles. They will help you tackle unstable or slippery terrain. You will be able to go faster, further and last longer. The message is clear: with them, you will always have the edge.

How to use walking poles on a hike?

Having hiking poles is good, but knowing how to use them is even better. If you are just starting out, check out our guide on how to use walking and hiking poles CimAlp.

Adjusting walking poles: what is the right height?

To find the ideal pole length, let your arm hang naturally by your side. Bend your forearm to a 90° angle. Hold it straight out in front of you.

If you cannot try your poles before buying, you can purchase them online. Multiply your height in cm by 0.68. Applying this formula will give you the ideal length for your poles.

Folding or telescopic walking poles?

Each of these 2 types of hiking pole has its own advantages. Here is what you need to know to choose your poles:

Telescopic poles generally have the advantage of weight. They are slightly bulkier than folding poles. Once collapsed, these poles are the length of their longest section.

The telescopic poles are practical because they can be adjusted in length. This is particularly useful for shorter people or on steep slopes.

What tips and baskets should you use for your walking poles?

Baskets help hikers on difficult trails, making walking safer and more comfortable. Summer baskets are generally round and solid, preventing the pole tip from getting stuck between rocks. In winter, the baskets to use are wider and more open, to prevent the pole from sinking too deep into the snow.

Protective tips prevent soil erosion and are mandatory in certain nature parks. They also serve to absorb shocks and reduce noise on hard ground.

What materials are used for trek and hiking poles?

To choose your poles, consider the materials, as they influence weight and durability.

Aluminium hiking poles are less expensive and more durable than carbon ones. On average, a pair weighs between 500 and 650 grams. Aluminium withstands heavy pressure. It is difficult to break or bend. However, aluminium absorbs vibrations less effectively.

Carbon poles are much lighter — a pair weighs on average between 250 and 500 grams. Carbon fibre reduces vibrations but generally offers less resistance than aluminium versions.

Under heavy pressure, carbon poles are more fragile. However, they are well suited to dynamic and sporting activities such as fast hiking or trail running.
