Interview with Aurélie Grangé-Paul

3 words that define you as an athlete?

Play, determination and sharing!

3 values that define you as a person?

Optimism, humour and empathy.

Why do you feel you belong to the Cimalp family?

Those who know me know how much importance I place on human relationships and values. A shared passion — the mountains, sport and nature — with respect and care for the natural world. The desire to share what brings us together and drives us, and to pass it on. Athletes I admire. That's why I'm proud to be part of this team.

Your best and worst memory in the mountains — and why?

My best mountain memory is impossible to sum up in just one! There were those 2 days and a night outside of time spent just the two of us — me and my daughter — at the foot of the Fiz massif last summer. And I also have a Pyrenean col in my mind. A long climb on steep trails in the fog, an effort shared with a great bunch of friends, and then we reach the summit and suddenly, in the space of a few seconds, it becomes magical — the sun lights up our weary faces, a breathtaking sea of clouds, and the greatest peaks rising through it all. The feeling of being on top of the world, emotions shared... My worst memory... a phone call. A friend gone too soon, taken by the mountain. It puts things in perspective. That's the mountain too. Being reminded of how lucky we are to be alive. Never having regrets, because tomorrow everything can stop.

What do the mountains inspire in you?

The mountains inspire me with serenity and humility. I feel alive and exactly where I belong when I'm up there — nothing matters as much as the present moment and the majestic scenery unfolding before my eyes.

What is your relationship with the environment and ecology?

I worry about our planet and it genuinely makes me anxious to think that our environment is being disrupted and partly doomed to disappear. The future of coming generations is at risk. So I act at my own level to align as much as possible with my values of sobriety, while still trying to live a contemporary life. Sometimes it ties my mind in knots. I try to share and raise awareness with my children — keeping them as connected as possible with this precious nature, and teaching them to contemplate and respect it.

Another great passion / talent besides sport?

My kids! Not very original, but I'm absolutely mad about them! And I'm passionate about cooking. I love testing and inventing recipes, tasting unusual flavours that sometimes nobody else enjoys — and of course eating! I could also add music. Every moment of my life comes with a playlist!
