Ilona is originally from the Pyrenees. She left that beautiful massif at the age of 14 to study at the Moûtiers high school (Savoie), where she followed a dual-qualification mountain programme.

Her young age doesn't stop her from knowing that her passions are as much climbing as mountaineering in all its forms: ice climbing, dry tooling, ski touring, ridge routes and more...

At 18, her goal is to become a high-mountain guide and mountain rescue worker. Cimalp is proud to support her on all her adventures — a trust she is deeply grateful for.

Interview with Ilona Serrar

3 words that define you as an athlete?

Passionate. Determined. Perseverant.

3 values that define you as a person?

Humility, altruism and fighting spirit.

Why do you feel you belong to the Cimalp family?

I identify deeply with the values Cimalp stands for, and I'm proud to represent a French mountain brand.

Your best and worst memory in the mountains — and why?

My best memory — hard to pick just one. So many days have been incredible and will stay with me for a long time… The Grand Capucin, with its granite worthy of a mountain poster: after a full day battling wind and rain, reaching the summit brought an immense sense of relief. That feeling gradually turned into deep pride. I shared that day with people who mean a great deal to me, which makes the memory all the more powerful.

My worst memory, without hesitation: the avalanche that swept up two of my rope partners while we were ice climbing. Fortunately, we pulled them out of the snow quickly enough that they were unharmed. That event was a turning point in my life as a mountaineer — a stark reminder of the vulnerability we face when operating in this environment.

What do the mountains inspire in you?

Tranquillity, freedom, pushing your limits, the team spirit of the rope, humility, vastness, vulnerability…

What is your relationship with the environment and ecology?

I care deeply about the environment — I took part in a Swiss expedition focused on climate change and its impact on mountain environments, from glacier retreat to permafrost melt.

Another great passion or talent beyond sport?

When I'm not in the mountains, my two main passions are reading and music — I play guitar and piano.
